PMBOK 7th available
PMBOK7 is expected to be open at August, 1st, but on July, 1st it became available to PMI members.
Now let’s give an overview of PMBOK7, which includes project management standard and guide.
As many other current methodologies, standards, and frameworks PMBOK moves to concept of principles and domains. That does not mean rejection of traditional tools and processes, but those – as well-known – are described at a Digital platform now. Tools, processes, techniques, and methods are implemented in certain company and project conditions within management domains and according to guiding principles. This approach provides more flexibility to organize projects in the most appropriate way.
PMBOK7 following the concept, founded in PMBOK6 offers 4 project management models: predictive, incremental, iterative and adaptive, and recommends development any types of hybrids. Cynefin and Stacey models are aplicable to define the project model.
PMBOK7 contains:
- brief standard
- Guide
- appendices, among those sponsor role, PMO role, product management vs project management.
Project management standard defines Value management system and 12 guiding principles.
Value delivery system includes 8 functions:
- Provide Oversight and Coordination
- Present Objectives and Feedback
- Facilitate and Support
- Perform work and contribute insights
- Apply Expertise
- Provide Business Direction and Insight
- Provide resources and Direction
- Maintain Governance
Internal and External environment are also parts of th value delivery system.
12 Project management principles are:
- Be a diligent, respectful, and caring steward
- Create a collaborative project team environment
- Effectively engage with stakeholders
- Focus on Value
- Recognize, Evaluate, and respond to system interactions
- Demonstrate Leadership behaviors
- Tailor based on context
- Build quality into processes and deliverables
- Navigate complexity
- Optimize risk responses
- Embrace adaptability and resiliency
- Enable change to achieve the envisioned future state.
The Guide includes and describes 8 performance domains:
- Project
- Team
- Development approach and lifecycle
- Planning
- Project work
- Delivery
- Measurement
- Uncertainty.
The special chapter Tailoring deals with interconnections between Domains, processes, methods, and artifacts.
CAPM certification prolongation
CAPM – Certified Associate in program management – is the basic PMI certification. Previously, CAPM was granted only for 3 years.
Now certificate holders are not obliged to pass exam each 3 years, 15 pdu’s only are necessary instead.
We recommend this certification for young specialists, bachelors, masters, who start their career. You need to gain 23 contact hours, no work experience required.
PMI BA certification is available online now
PMI extends the list of online proctored certifications. Now the PMI-BA certification for business analytics is available.
Free PMP preparation test by PMI
PMI issued a free (only PMI registration is necessary) PMP preparation test.
As a PMP trainer I immediately tried it. I find very positive to have a vendor-based sample test. It gives a candidate readiness baseline. In case of an incorrect answer, an explanation is shown immediately.
The test seems to be a bit more simple than a real PMP(r) test, but that is my own “feeling”.
Anyway, I recommend all candidates to check your current readiness with this sample test.
PMI simplifies application forms for all certifications
PMI announced on 8th of June that in mid-June application forms for all kinds of certifications become shorter and more simple.
PMP new version launch moved to 2021
PMI officially notified that the new version of PMP certification is postponed to January 2nd, 2021.
The current exam will be available 6 months more till Dec. 31th, 2020.
PMP7 standard draft discussion
On January, 15th, PMI(r) published 37 pages of the draft standard PMBOK7.
The main change – and challenge – there are PRINCIPLES instead processes now. PMBOK Standard 7th delivers 12 main project management principles.
Knowledge areas will be described later (probably in electronic form only).
The draft is devoted to soft skills area at 90% level. It seems a bit strange to me ’cause hard skills in the PM area are of high value as well.
The draft presents the “umbrella” approach to project management, including predictive (waterfall), agile and hybrid models. As a part of this approach the project leader role is introduced. This role unites project manager, scrum master and other leadership roles.
Another ‘strange’ item for me is the descriptive approach. Standards are usually predictive. But this one contains descriptions, examples, and references to ‘others”.
The PMP 2020 new version seems to be in line with this draft.
Registration to the new PMP pilot is opened
Since January 2020, PMP candidates can select either pass the current exam till June 30th, or participate in the March pilot group. Read more about pilot group rules here.
PMP 2020 pilot group rules
The new PMP® exam is launching 1 July 2020. PMP® candidates are offered the opportunity to be part of a pilot group that takes the exam before its global launch. Here’s what you need to know:
- Dates to sit for the pilot exam are 9 March through 20 March
- The pilot exam is available in English language only.
- PMI Members will receive a rebate of USD $81 for the $405 exam fee.
- Non-PMI Members will receive a rebate of USD $111 for the $555 exam fee.
- All pilot participants are eligible for a re-take of the exam at no cost.
- 600 participants, with global representation, will be accepted.
- Pilot participants should prepare using the PMP® Exam Content Outline and the list of top used reference books.
- PMP® candidates can choose to participate in the pilot when they pay for their exam.
- Pilot participants will not receive a pass/fail score immediately after taking the exam but will receive their results in May 2020.
PMP update information
On May, 2019, the PMI has informed about changes in the PMP certification. First information says the changes take effect on December, 15th. But on the last week of August the effective date was changed to July, 1st, 2020. The current exam version is available till June, 30th, 2020.
The PMI has presented changes details in the PMP Examination Content outline — ECO. And the certification content changes greatly. Current version as like as many previous versions are developed around the project management phases, i.e. initiation – planning – execution – monitoring and control – closure and knowledge areas. The new version is built around the three PM competency areas.
42% of exam questions (14 tasks) are in leadership segment; 50% (17 tasks) are in project management processes segment and 8 % (4 tasks) are in business strategy.

The «2019 PMP Exam Content Crossover Map» document matches exam themes across current and future version. For example:
- Assess behavior through the emotional needs of key project stakeholders
- the use of personality indicators
- Assess opportunities to deliver value incrementally
- as necessary to find the Minimum Viable Product
- Recommend a project methodology/approach (i.e, predictive, agile, hybrid)
- Use iterative, incremental practices throughout the project lifecycle (e.g., lessons learned, stakeholder engagement, risk)
- Classify compliance categories
- Coordinate with other projects and other operations
- Assess organizational culture
